Women and Art – Dale Sharon

Dale Sharon, a highly regarded docent at the St. Louis Art Museum and an exhibited artist, will be looking at Women and Art, as represented in SLAM’s permanent collection.

Parts 1 and II will address how women were depicted in visual arts over the centuries. How women were represented in painting, sculpture, and prints. Women could be…the nurturing mother or the whore; the seductress or the loving self-sacrificing wife; the Barbie Doll or the virtuous saint; the heroine or the upper-class noblewoman; the hard worker or the window dressing socialite.

Parts III and IV will focus on women artists. Even in the face of challenges and obstacles, the world was gifted with remarkable female artists throughout history. These women artists belonged to different social eras and various art movements and had vastly different working conditions and points of view. Even though we cannot possibly hope to mention every single female artist who has left remarkable marks on the history of art, we will highlight some that inspired the world with both their extraordinary craft and their unyielding courage.
